18th Sunday in Ordinary Time 2026
My dear friends in Christ, look around this sacred space today. Every single heart sitting in these pews carries a hidden ledger: a balance sheet of anxieties, unpaid debts of grief, silent fears about tomorrow, and the aching questions that keep you awake at three o’clock in the morning.
We live in a world that sells us solutions to our emptiness. The world tells you: “If you only buy this, if you only earn that, if you only achieve this status, your heart will finally be full.” But have you really filled that emptiness? The answer is NO.
And yet, 700 years before Christ, the prophet Isaiah looked down the corridors of human history and asked the very question that haunts modern man:
“Why spend your money for that which is not bread, and your labour for that which does not satisfy?”
— Isaiah 55:2
We spend our lives buying counterfeit ‘bread’ that leaves our souls starving! We feed the ordinary man and still remain empty; and in that emptiness, we ask a lot of questions.
The Divine Irony of That Emptiness
The Apostles in the Gospel looked at a massive, hungry crowd in a deserted place and panicked (Matthew 14:15). They looked at the reality of human need and they saw impossibility. They said to the Master: “Send them away. We do not have enough” (Matthew 14:15–17).
And here comes the message: How often do you say that to God in the quiet of your own home?
“Lord, send this burden away, my marriage doesn’t have enough love left.”
“Send this trial away, I don’t have enough strength.”
“Send this cross away, my faith is too small.”
Notice how the Divine Master responds: “Bring them here to me” (Matthew 14:18).
BRING THEM TO ME
Christ does not demand that you bring Him an abundance. He asks you to bring Him your smallness, your five loaves of fatigue, and your two fish of anxiety, so that He may bless them, break them, and make them more than enough.
Just like a caring Father or Mother, we are never abandoned in the inadequacies of life. He comes to us to provide for us and to show us that Fatherly love. But the question is: Are we ready, too, to remain in His love?
This brings us to the very heart of our reflection today, in Saint Paul’s resounding trumpet call to the Romans:
“Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword? ... No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through Him who loved us.”
— Romans 8:35, 37
My friends in Christ, mark these words down: Saint Paul does not promise us a life free from tribulation. He does not say that the Christian will never know heartbreak, financial loss, sickness, or the sting of bereavement. This is because the WORLD offers a false peace that promises the absence of conflict. Christ offers a real peace that guarantees His presence in the middle of the conflict.
Look closely at the word Paul uses: Conquerors. Not merely survivors dragging ourselves across the finish line of life, bruised and defeated, but more than conquerors! Why? Because suffering is no longer a dead end; in the hands of the Crucified Lord, suffering becomes the very instrument of our redemption!
What Is Your "Separation"?
When hardship strikes, the Devil’s primary strategy is to convince you of a lie: “God has abandoned you. Look at your pain—if God loved you, this wouldn't be happening.”
Saint Paul tears that lie to shreds. He lists everything that this world can throw at a human soul—death, life, angels, principalities, height, depth, things present, and things to come—and he declares that none of them possess the power to cut the tether between your soul and the Heart of God.
There is only one thing in the entire universe that can separate you from the love of God: your own willful refusal to receive it. No external catastrophe can do it!
Cancer cannot separate you from the love of Christ.
The loss of a job cannot separate you from the love of Christ.
Betrayal, loneliness, or the weight of your own past sins cannot separate you from the love of Christ.
Only YOU can step away.
THE INVITATION
Finally, Isaiah’s invitation comes alive: “Come to the waters... buy without money and without cost” (Isaiah 55:1).
Today, the miracle of the multiplication we saw in the Gospel will unfold right before your eyes as simple bread and wine are transformed into the Body, Blood, Soul, and Divinity of Jesus Christ in this Holy MASS—the true Bread that satisfies forever.
When you step forward to receive the Holy Eucharist today, lay your hunger, your tiredness, and your fears upon the altar. Do not leave here today believing the lie that you are fighting alone. You are bound to an almighty Saviour by an unbreakable chain of divine love.
Go forth today, not as victims of your circumstances, but as conquerors through Him who loved us.
