29th Sunday in Ordinary Time 2026
My dear friends, if you look at the modern world, you will discover that humanity is caught in a perpetual, agonizing tug-of-war. We are pulled on one side by the claims of the world, and on the other by the demands of God.
Look at the Gospel today. The Pharisees, the religious elites and the Herodians, the political sycophants, form an unholy alliance. Normally, they hated each other, but they came together for one purpose: TO TRAP OUR BLESSED LORD. They approached Him with false, slippery flattery: "Teacher, we know that you are true... Tell us, then, is it lawful to pay taxes to Caesar, or not?"
Oh, what a clever trap! If Our Lord had said "No," the Herodians would arrest Him as a political traitor to Rome. If He said "Yes," the Pharisees would denounce Him as a religious traitor to Israel! They thought they had boxed the Almighty into a corner!.
But Our Lord, with divine brilliance, saw right through their hypocrisy. He said: "Show me the coin for the tax." They brought Him a Roman denarius. He looked at it and asked a simple question that echoes across twenty centuries: "Whose likeness and inscription is this?" They answered: "Caesar’s." Then came the thunderclap: "Render therefore to Caesar the things that are Caesar’s, and to God the things that are God’s."
The Divine Logic
Do you see what Our Blessed Lord did? He elevated the conversation from political squabbling to spiritual destiny! He was telling them: The coin bears the image of Caesar, so give it back to Caesar. BUT MAN BEARS THE IMAGE OF GOD, SO GIVE MAN BACK TO GOD! The coin belongs to the state because it bears the earthly king's imprint.
But you, your soul, your mind, your heart, your eternity, do not belong to the state, nor to the market, nor to your bank account, nor to social media, you were created in the Imago Dei—the Image and Likeness of God.
On the other hand, look at how seamlessly the Holy Ghost connects the above truth throughout today's readings. In the First Reading (Isaiah 45), God speaks to Cyrus, the pagan King of Persia. Cyrus did not even know the God of Israel, yet God used him as an instrument to free His people. God says: "I name you, though you do not know me... I am the Lord, and there is no other." Even world powers, political rulers, and economic systems are merely tools under the absolute sovereignty of Almighty God! Caesar thinks he is supreme, but Caesar himself is governed by the God he ignores.
In the Second Reading (1 Thessalonians 1), Saint Paul praises the early Christians not because they were great political activists, but because of their "work of faith, labour of love, and steadfastness of hope." They lived in the pagan Roman Empire, yet they belonged entirely to Christ and not to the pegan Empire.
Practical Application for Christians Today
Now, my dear friends, let us make this profoundly practical. What does it mean for you and me to "render to God the things that are God's"?
1. Stop Giving Caesar Your Soul
We live in an age where the modern "Caesar" secular culture, consumerism, political tribalism demands our complete worship. We give Caesar 8 hours a day at work, 3 hours a day on television, and 4 hours on our smartphones... and then we give God 10 lukewarm minutes on Sunday morning, complaining that the homily was too long!
Practical Test: Look at your calendar and your bank statement. They reveal who your God really is. Give civil authorities their due, pay your taxes, obey just laws, be a good citizen. But never give the world your total allegiance, your moral principles, or your worship.
2. Reclaim the Stamp of the Heavenly King
When you were baptized, God stamped His divine seal onto your soul. You became a living coin minted in Heaven not on earth. Ask yourself today, Whose image am I showing to the world? When people talk to you at work, do they see the cynical, angry face of Caesar, or do they see the gentle, loving face of Jesus Christ?
If you have allowed the dirt and grime of sin to obscure God's image in you, go to the Sacrament of Confession. Sacrament of Reconciliation is the divine polish that restores the shining image of the Heavenly King upon your soul.
3. Live with Divine Purpose
Just as God grasped the hand of Cyrus even when Cyrus didn't realize it, God has grasped your right hand. He has equipped you for a purpose in this generation. Do not live a mediocre Christian life! Do not be a spectator! As Saint Paul reminded us, let your faith be a work, your love a labour, and your hope steadfast.
Finally, my dear brothers and sisters, money, politics, titles, and material possessions will all pass away. The coins of Caesar will rust and be forgotten. But you will live forever.
When you stand before the Judgment Seat of Christ at the end of your life, Our Blessed Lord will look at your soul and ask the very same question He asked the Pharisees: "Whose image and inscription is this?" May your soul be so transformed by grace, so filled with prayer, and so offered in sacrifice, that He will recognize His own Holy Face in you, and say: "Welcome home, my good and faithful servant."
God love you the more!!
